THE HISTORY BENEATH OUR FEET Right outside our doors lies a piece of transportation history. In 1890, the Tacoma and Steilacoom Railway Co. established the world’s first interurban streetcar system.This groundbreaking 12-mile route traveled from downtown Tacoma directly to 6th Avenue, before continuing out to Steilacoom. Today, the original tracks and wooden ties are still hiding right beneath the street's asphalt. If you know where to look, you can still spot the ghosts of this massive streetcar network hiding in plain sight—from the perfectly angled corners where passengers used to disembark, to the oddly wide intersections where multiple trolley lines merged.THE CONTEST We want to hear from you.
